this summer of heat and humidity, of not enough rain and so many beach walks. this summer of fear and anxiety, of projects and reading and breathing and crazy sleeps. it is not far from a wrap.

with fingers crossed and heart wide open, i move into fall programming and class offerings.

gentle yoga classes shall resume, held in the upton room at west royalty community centre on mondays and fridays (as per the schedule below) from 10:30 – 11:30. 

gentle yoga offers a lovely way to move your body for good health, longevity, and injury protection. breathwork and mindfulness, moving with intention, and dedicating time to honour the beautiful mess you are is included in each class. no previous yoga experience is required. getting up and down from the floor is required.

as per covid protocols, there will be no drop ins and all participants must be pre-registered.

it is necessary that you bring your own yoga mat, strap (yoga strap, neck tie, robe belt, something that will serve), and blanket/towel. if you have one or two yoga blocks, feel free to bring them along for pose modifications.

the fall schedule runs in three 8-class sessions.  registration and payment will be accepted for only current/upcoming session.

the importance of breathing need hardly be stressed. it provides the oxygen for the metabolic processes; literally it supports the fires of life. but breath as “pneuma” is also the spirit or soul. we live in an ocean of air like fish in a body of water. by our breathing we are attuned to our atmosphere. if we inhibit our breathing we isolate ourselves from the medium in which we exist. in all oriental and mystic philosophies, the breath holds the secret to the highest bliss. that is why breathing is the dominant factor in the practice of yoga.           ~ alexander lowen

 

open heart

i have been teaching this particular class — gentle yoga — for more than a dozen years.  only 3 times in those years have i taken more than 2 weeks off at a time. until, of course, this year.

we enjoyed a lovely practice together on friday, march 13th and by the time i got home there was notification that all programming in the building was immediately ended.

11 weeks later, with a new layer of safety precautions, we can again gather our energies, our hearts, and spirits, in one room, to practice.  a gentle practice to keep our joints strong, our spines resilient, our connective tissues juicy. a gentle practice to lead us out of the physiological effects of stress and into a nourishing state of being.

for 8 weeks, beginning monday june 8 and ending friday july 31, we will have practice twice a week together.  10am on mondays and fridays at Hillsborough Park Community Centre.

Baby-Kettlebell

it is hard to believe i am creating 2020 class schedules, but indeed i am.  well, let’s just leap into the leap year, shall we?

both gentle yoga and group kettlebell class will continue to be held on mondays and fridays in the upton room at west royalty community centre.  gentle yoga is 10:30 – 11:30 and group kettlebell class is 12:00 – 12:45.

kettlebell training will help you meet your fitness goals! compound exercises work multiple muscle groups simultaneously, developing strength and muscular endurance and efficient caloric expenditure. the workout puts the focus on integrating breathing, movement and alignment with your ability to control balance and weight. working with the kettlebell is combined with body weight exercises for an all around heart-pumping workout.

**if you have not previously worked with kettlebells, dropping in is not safe or suitable. please get in touch so we can give you a proper introduction before you join the class.

enjoy a 60 minute gentle yoga practice geared toward maintaining joint health and body imagesstrength as we age, move through stress-related soft-tissue tension, arthritis, or a variety of joint injuries.  listen to your heart’s voice and move gently through your days.

a gentle flow warm-up sets the tone for stretches, basic postures, warm laughter, and a rejuvenating final relaxation.

no yoga experience is necessary for this class.

beachit has been a glorious summer.  i love heat and sunshine and the slow pace of my life during this season. beach walks, ocean swims, deck dining, books and beer and birdnerding.

i do hope you found wonder and peace in your summer months.

just as summer arises, so too will it pass away.  the steady turning of the wheel; the hours of the sun in the sky shorten, fresh food is harvested from trees and fields, the return to school, the landscape takes on new colours.

and, new sessions of GENTLE YOGA  and GROUP KETTLEBELL CLASS begin!  all classes held at the West Royalty Community Centre, (usually) in the Upton Room.  mondays and fridays, GENTLE YOGA 10:30 – 11:30a and GROUP KETTLEBELL CLASS 12:00 – 12:45p.
