Koftas In Sauce

Meatball Ingredients

  • 1lb ground lamb (we used chicken today)
  • 1tsp ginger root, crushed
  • 1tsp garlic, crushed
  • 1tsp garam masala
  • 1 1/2tsp poppy seeds
  • 1tsp salt
  • 1/2tsp chili powder
  • medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • fresh cilantro (we had none so used powdered corriander)
  • 1tbsp gram flour
  • 2/3c oil

Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 3 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 2 small cinnamon sticks
  • 2 black cardamoms
  • 1tsp ginger root, finely chopped
  • 1tsp garlic, crushed

  • 1tsp salt
  • 4 1/2tbsp goat yoghurt
  • 2/3c water

Method

Place ground meat, ginger, garlic, garam masala, poppy seeds, salt, chili powder, onion, chili, coriander powder and gram flour in a bowl.  Mix well with a fork.

Form meat mixture into small meatballs and set aside.

To make the sauce, heat the oil and lightly saute the onions until golden brown.  Add cinnamon sticks and cardamoms to the pan.  Lower the hear and stir fry for 5 minutes.  Add ginger, garlic, salt, yoghurt and water.  Stir to mix well.

Heat oil in fry pan and fry the meatballs, turning occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden.

Serve meatballs with sauce.  They would be well enjoyed with chapatis; we ate them with peas and basmati rice.
